Saint Mary's Baseball again split a double header over the weekend, this time with the Santa Clara Broncos on the opening weekend of WCC play. The split gave Santa Clara the series after squeaking out an 11-inning win in the opener on Friday.

With the 12-0 win in game one and a 11-0 loss in game two on Saturday, the pattern continued of the Gaels winning the first game convincingly and losing the second by a solid margin as well.

Connor Linchey started for SMC in game one and threw five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and two walks to seven strikeouts.
Ryan Sanders and
John Damozonio each threw two innings of shutout baseball while
Christian Almanza hit two homers to drive in five runs.

Sophomore catcher/designated hitter
Caleb Lomavita was named to the inaugural Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. Lomavita had a stellar 2022 season in which he earned College Baseball Freshman All-American honors and was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team.

Cal returned four starters from last year's starting lineup, including INF/C
Dom Souto, outfielder
Rodney Green Jr., C/DH Lomavita, and outfielder
Nathan Manning. That quartet combined to club 21 home runs and drive in 111 RBI. Overall, Cal returns 16 letter winners from last year's quad.

ABOUT BYU
BYU played four games last week, going 2-2. The Cougars posted a one-hit, 7-0, shutout over Utah on Tuesday, before going 1-2 at LMU over the weekend. BYU lost game one of the series on Thursday (12-2) but bounced back to win game two on Friday (7-0), before dropping the rubber-match on Saturday (10-9) in a slugfest.Â

Senior outfielder Cole Gambill, junior righthand pitcher Jack Sterner and sophomore infielder Ozzie Pratt were selected by the West Coast Conference head coaches to the 2023 All-WCC Preseason Baseball Team. The Cougars were also picked to finish third in the WCC, but currently sit at eighth in the standings, a half-game behind Saint Mary's.
