MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's softball was back home last weekend and earned a split against two opponents from the East Coast in Maine and Dartmouth. One of the big arms in the circle that helped the Gaels pitching staff lock down both offenses was Avrey Wolverton, who was named this week's Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week.
Wolverton drew the start in the final game of the weekend and did not disappoint. She picked up her first win of the season, going the distance and allowing just one run while doing so, scattering five hits and two walks across those seven innings. She also limited the amount of trouble she got into, allowing two hits in the fourth, two runners in the fifth, but never allowed a runner to get past second base (aside from a home run in the sixth). For the week, she tossed 11.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts.
Along with her teammates in the circle, the Gaels allowed just eight runs on 14 hits across four games last weekend. Wolverton is displaying some of the best numbers on the team as well, with a 1.54 earned run average across 22.2 innings, and a solid .244 opponent's batting average. Her 5.6 strikeouts per seven innings rate is second best on the Gaels.
Saint Mary's is on the road this weekend, with a schedule that has already seen some change. Originally scheduled to begin the week at Idaho State, that doubleheader on Friday has been canceled due to an impending snowstorm. SMC will attempt to play three games at Utah State beginning on Saturday, March 25 with a doubleheader scheduled for 11:00 am PT.
