DAVIS, Calif. – Saint Mary's evened up the season series with UC Davis with a convincing 14-2 win over the Aggies on Tuesday.
Â
The Gaels piled on the Aggies in the ninth for the lopsided score, but led the entire way to get the season split.
Ryan Wiltse threw four, no-hit innings for SMC to get the win and their offense would score in six different innings, including seven runs in the ninth.
Â
Nathan Chong starting the scoring again for Saint Mary's with a two-run single into left that plated
Coleman Schmidt and
Christian Almanza for an early 2-0 lead.
Â
A sac fly from Schmidt in the third inning scored
Bill Ralston to add another run to the Gaels lead at 3-0. A two-run double got the Aggies on the board in the bottom of the inning, but freshman
Jason Reitz stopped the rally there and the Gaels still led by one heading into the fourth.
Â
That 3-2 score was as close as UC Davis would get to the Gaels. Schmidt smacked a solo home run to left (10) to put Saint Mary's back up by two at 4-2 in the fifth inning.
Â
Two runs scored on an infield single by
Gavin Napier in the sixth as
Blake McDonald came in from third and
Jared Mettam scored all the way from second when the freshman shortstop never stopped running with two outs on the long throw by the Aggies shortstop to first to make it 6-2.
Â
Saint Mary's kept tacking with one more run via an RBI single to center from
Seth Nager to score
Jared Mettam in the eighth and it was 7-2 Gaels.
Â
Then SMC blew the game wide open in the ninth. A triple from Almanza in front of a diving attempt by the center fielder scored Ralston all the way from first. Schmidt doubled in Almanza, and Chong singled in Schmidt to put the Gaels up 10-2.
Â
A solid single from Napier into right center scored
Dalton Mashore and Mettam to make it 13-2, and a dropped ball at first on what could have been a double play scored
Adam Enyart to round out the 14-2 final.
Â
