BASE | Gaels Blow Out Road Runners in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball lit up the scoreboard and earned a season split with CSU Bakersfield in convincing fashion with a 14-2 victory over the Roadrunners.

In their first meeting back on February 21, the Gaels stranded runners in the 5-3 loss, but SMC did none of that on Tuesday in the blowout win.

Bill Ralston homered twice in his last game on Sunday, and would do it again tonight. His first dinger came in the first innning to get the scoring started and his second would happen in the sixth inning to make it 12-1 Saint Mary's. In between home runs he had a double in the third inning to score Gavin Napier to make it 11-0 Gaels.

In the second inning, two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Jared Mettam and he delivered with a double to left center that scored Blake McDonald and Nathan Chong. SMC was not done in the second, as a Gavin Napier single scored Mettam and Dalton Mashore, followed by a Christian Almanza single to score Cody Kashimo for a 6-0 lead. Coleman Schmidt would single to center, and though he was out trying to stretch it into a double, his base hit scored Almanza and Napier and it was 8-0 Saint Mary's after just two innings.

A Mettam sac fly scored McDonald for a 9-0 lead in the third and a Napier single made it 10-0 as Mashore scored, before Ralston's double put SMC up 11-0.

After the Roadrunners got one back in the fifth, Ralston delivered his second homer and McDonald drove in Chong for a 13-1 Gaels lead in the sixth. Freshman Matteo Bellisimo would slug his first collegiate home run to cap off the scoring for the Gaels in the eighth to make it 14-1.

Jack Snook opened the game and threw three shutout innings for SMC, allowing just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Ryan Spalliero threw two shutout innings as well, as the Gaels used five pitchers for the Tuesday tilt.
