FOLSOM, Calif. – The 2022-23 Saint Mary's Rowing season came to a close on Saturday morning with the completion of the 2023 West Coast Conference Championship. Saturday marked the sixth time the Gaels have raced on Lake Natoma this season.
SMC finished 6th overall for the second year running, but their improvement in speed and times show promise for years to come.
LAST ONE FAST ONE
The first race of the morning for the Gaels was the Varsity Four. Starting in lane 6, the SMC boat consisted of Coxswain Madison Sciba, Kaitlin Quezon, Madison Ciccolella, Kiki Koeppen, Madison Potts.
The Gaels got off to a solid start, going stroke for stroke with Santa Clara who was just to their left. SMC hung close to Creighton's varsity four boat for a majority of the race as well but were unable to stay close down the stretch. The Gaels finished the race in 6th out of 7 boats with a 8:28.39. Gonzaga won the heat with a time of 7:31.38.
The next race up was the 2v8 race. SMC's boat consisted of Coxswain Camille Bischoff, Stroke Lea Glafkides 7 Carolyn Huckel, 6 Alyssa Teague, 5 Kendall Brazeel, 4 Vivian Hill, 3 Lauren Hinton, 2 Ka'Nayah Landers Daniels, Bow Alyssa Terry.
It was a level start for the entire field over the first two minutes of the race. The field started to spread out around the 1000m mark, with Gonzaga leading the way. SMC tried to hang with Creighton who were to their right in lane 5, but as the race wore on, the Gaels were unable to maintain pace with the Bluejays boat.
The Gaels finished in 6th with a time of 7:13.09, a solid 20 seconds faster than their 2v8 finish at the WIRA's two weeks ago. Gonzaga once again won the heat, crossing the line in a 6:45.61.
The grand finale of the morning was the Varsity 8 race. SMC once again lined up in lane 6, with a boat consisting of Coxswain Mavis Read-Kinney, Stroke Danijela Concion, 7 Faith Freligh, 6 Ella Heide, 5 Olivia Watson, 4 Emily Ferbet, 3 Emma Scanlan, 2 Hathaway Scarpine, Bow Katie Ferbet.
It was a strong start for every boat in the final, as lanes 2-6 were practically dead even through the opening two minutes of the race.
SMC once again paced the Creighton boat, as the two jockeyed for position throughout the first half of the race. The Gaels did their best to hang with the Bluejays, but they ended up putting some distance between themselves and the SMC v8 boat, as the Gaels came home in 6th position. SMC's final time of 7:01.43 was 13 seconds quicker than their time at the WIRA's two weeks prior.
Gonzaga once again claimed victory at the WCC Championships, winning for the eighth-consecutive season, and the 21st time overall. The Gaels snatched 6th place for the second year running, finishing with 12 total points.
Following the event, two Gaels were named to the All-WCC Team: Olivia Watson and Hathaway Scarpine. Both rowers were named to the All-WCC Preseason team back in February.
WHAT COACH EBKE HAD TO SAY
"Today we finished our season on a great note for the whole team. All our boats showed progress in margins, times, and race composure from earlier in the year and last year and we're excited about what this means for the future. Olivia Watson and Hathaway Scarpine were both awesome selections for the WCC all conference team and we're really proud of them and the hard work they've put in all year. This was a great year for the Gaels and we're going to continue to work so we only get better from here!"
