HAYWARD, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Track and Field teams hit the track for one of the final times this season as they headed to Chabot College for the West Coast Last Chance Meet.
The Gaels were on it from the first event, as runners from both teams posted significant time drops across a host of disciplines.
FIELD ACTION
SMC had a handful of athletes in the field events as action got underway at Chabot College Sunday morning.
In the women's Shot Put,
Piper Kunesh finished 3
rd with a 6.94m throw. In the men's shot put, Gavin Voskamp claimed second place with a 13.98m throw.
Piper Kunesh competed in the discus as well, as she was one of two competitors. Her longest throw came in at 18.02. Voskamp was one of three competitors in the men's discus, as he won the event with a 43.13m throw.
TRACK TIME
Action got underway with the 4x100 relay, and the SMC women were the only team featured. A relay consisting of McKenna Burrows,
Natalia Nathan,
Emily Quinby, and Maddie Dwyer raced a 55.03, setting a SMC record in the process.
In the women's 1500m, two Gaels finished inside the top-5.
Molly Dreher snatched 3
rd, crossing the line in a 4:32.30, with
Dani Rowlinson just a few spots back in 5
th, smashing her personal best by two seconds to run a 4:35.25.
Freshman
Kaylee Barnes sneaked in the top-10, just eclipsing her previous personal best with a 4:42.92.
Callie Buchanan was right on her best time with a 5:41.6, with her teammate
Aushmitha Grewal a few spots back with a huge 13 second personal best, running a 5:41.30.
On the men's side,
Jason Habash led the way in the event, sneaking under the four-minute mark for the first time as he claimed 3
rd with a 3:59.16.
Jackson Seubert snatched a top-10 finish as he set a personal best with a 4:06.73. His teammate
Bryan Cromartie just missed his best time as he finished 11
th with a 4:15.51.
The next event was the 400m, as
Piper Kunesh was the lone representative for SMC. She finished 6
th with a 1:05.78.
PERSONAL BEST GALORE
The short events kept coming, as the 100m was up next. McKenna Burrows set a new personal best as she claimed 9
th with a 14.41.
Emily Quinby just eclipsed her previous best time with a 14.53, finishing right behind Burrows in 10
th.
One of the best events of the day for SMC was the 800m, as the women's side set the pace with some speedy times.
No one was quicker than
Penelopea Gordon, who won the event in a time of 2:08.44. Gordon's previous best was a 2:13.26 which she set just a few weeks ago at the Beach Invite. Gordon continues to tear up the track as a freshman, as her 2:08.44 puts her second fastest all-time in SMC history, and the fastest 800m by a freshman as well.
Klara Frih ran a solid race as well, finishing a few spots behind Gordon in 3
rd with a 2:13.03.
On the men's side,
Blaine Reynolds also came away with the Gaels victory, as he won in the event in personal best time of 1:53.85. His previous best, a 1:55.44, came back in March at the West Coast Twilight.
Reinder Prince followed in third as he was right on his best with a 1:55.55. A trio of Gaels followed, with
Eric Martinez in 5
th,
Thomas Osborne in 6
th, and
Noah Pagaran in 7
th.
Max Barnes smashed his personal best, as he crossed the line in 13
th with a three second personal best of 2:05.06.
Isaiah Jimenez finished right behind Barnes with another personal best of nearly a second as he finished with a 2:05.13.
The personal bests kept coming, as
Bryan Cromartie ran a 2:06.48, dropping two seconds from the Portland Indoor One earlier in the season.
After a solid display in the 800m, SMC tried to replicate in the next event, the 200m.
Jaden DeSouza led the way, just sneaking under her previous personal best as she finished 5
th with a 26.22. DeSouza's time was also the quickest time in SMC history in the event.
Maddie Fletcher was also in the green, running a personal best 26.47.
Maddie Dwyer sneaked inside the top-10 as well with a personal best 26.91.
Piper Kunesh continued with the trend, running a personal best 28.65 as she finished 13
th.
McKenna Burrows and
Natalia Nathan rounded out the field for SMC, as Burrows set a personal best 29.41 to finish 14
th, as Nathan finished with a 30.43.
5K MADNESS
The marque event of the afternoon was the 5000m, as a host of Gaels from both sides set personal bests in the longest event of the day.
For the women,
Anna Ranieri led the way, claiming 3
rd place with a 20 second improvement to run a 17:52.66.
Sofia Cuevas clinched a 6
th place finish as she just finished under her previous best with a 18:10.45.
On the men's side, a 1-2 finish was the highlight of the day, as Cayden Hein and
Richard McLain took the top two spots. Hein smashed her personal best by over 10 seconds to run a 14:56.76, while McLain was just a few seconds back as he ran a 15:10.39.
Aidan Donovan joined Hein with a 10 second drop, as he ran a 15:33.67 to finish 7
th.
The day's action concluded with a few relays, as the Gaels made up two of the three relays' teams in the women's 4x400. The A relay consisting of
Maddie Fletcher,
Jaden DeSouza,
Klara Frih, and Penelopa Gordon led the way with a 3:53.21 and SMC record.
The B relay of
Anna Ranieri,
Emily Field,
Sofia Cuevas, and
Kaylee Barnes claimed 3
rd with a 4:28.72.
UP NEXT
The Gaels continue to edge closer towards the end of the season, as SMC will head to Portland next weekend for the Portland Distance Carnival on Saturday May 13.
