AZUSA, Calif. — Half of the 12 Gaels competitors at the Fransom Last Chance meet set new PRs, as Saint Mary's stormed into the Cougar Athletic Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific, and again put up some huge performances. Competing in the 800m, 5000m and 10,000m races, the Gaels continue to show improvements race over race as a distance program.
All four Gael competitors PRd in the 800m race, including a pair names etching themselves into the history books. Jason Habash led the charge with a new PR of 1:52.06, the second best in program history, good for 33rd in the field of 99 runners. From veteran to freshman, Daniel Martinez was not far behind Habash with a massive PR time of 1:53.12, finishing 39th, and besting his previous personal best by 3.58 seconds. His time went down as the fifth fastest in program history. Jacob Bravo and Gus Hollister each also ran PR times of 1:58.48 and 1:58.51.
In the 5000m, Jacob Moffett and Julius Largaespada both made their Saint Mary's debuts at this distance. Moffett led the way with a time of 15:01.63, good for 32nd in the field of 99, while Largaespada finished in 49th with a time of 15:17.15.Â
The 10,000m was where the Gaels shined the brightest. Zane Jackson, who starred at this distance on the cross country course all fall, finished second overall with a time of 30:00.37. Just a few strides behind Jackson was TK Berhe, finishing with a time of 30:09.58. While neither runners set a PR at this meet, they both demonstrated their abilities to pace themselves with the pack, and pull ahead late in the race.Â
The Gaels will run at the West Coast Last Chance meet next week at San Francisco State. It will be their final race before postseason.Â
