MORAGA, Calif. — With the 2023 track season winding down, Saint Mary's is close to putting a bow on a successful season. One of the many bright spots has been freshman Penelopea Gordon, who was named this week's Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time, and the first time during outdoor track season.
Running at the West Coast Last Chance Meet last weekend, No one was quicker than Penelopea Gordon. She won the 800m with a time of 2:08.44, and easily surpassed her previous best of 2:13.26, which she set just a few weeks ago at the Beach Invite. Gordon continues to tear up the track as a freshman, as her 2:08.44 puts her second fastest all-time in SMC history, and the fastest 800m by a freshman as well.
The day's action concluded with a few relays, as the Gaels made up two of the three relays' teams in the women's 4x400. The A relay consisting of Maddie Fletcher, Jaden DeSouza, Klara Frih, and Penelopa Gordon led the way with a 3:53.21 and SMC record.
The Gaels are one race closer towards the end of the season, as SMC will head to Portland next weekend for the Portland Distance Carnival on Saturday May 13. Following that event, Saint Mary's will know if they have anyone who has qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, which begin on May 24.
