SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Every single athletic team recorded at least a 3.0 grade point average at Saint Mary's this past year, the first time in school history the Gaels have been able to say that. With more records falling in the classroom, SMC was rewarded on the prestigious WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, announced by the West Coast Conference on Tuesday. Saint Mary's has 229 student-athletes who qualified, the most in school history for the second year in a row.
Â
This is the 11th-consecutive Honor Roll featuring more than 1,000 WCC student-athletes collection honors for possessing at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. A total of 1,805 student-athletes qualified for recognition, establishing a new conference record for academic success, surpassing the mark of 1,795 from 2020-21.
Â
Only grades earned at WCC institutions may be used in calculating the grade point average for this award. To be considered for this honor, student-athletes must meet the following requirements:
Â
1) Individuals must have earned a varsity letter in a sport which the conference determined a champion in the recently completed academic year.
2) The cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 must be based on a 4.0 scale.
3) The individuals must have successfully completed an average of at least 12 graded credit hours (non pass-fail hours) per term.
Â
The 229 Gaels are the second-most in the entire WCC, trailing only Gonzaga (285). Last year, Saint Mary's was tied for third with Santa Clara and trailed LMU. Four schools saw increases in their numbers from last year: Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, Pacific, and Pepperdine.
Â
The conference recognizes those on the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll in three separate categories:
Â
4.00-3.75 - Gold Honors
3.74-3.50 - Silver Honors
3.49-3.00 - Bronze Honors
