ROW | Seven Gaels Recognized as CRCA Scholar Athletes

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. — The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association has announced their annual Scholar Athletes list for the 2023 season and seven Gaels have been included.
Over 1,000 student-athletes representing 111 institutions have earned 2023 CRCA Scholar Athlete honors. To qualify, an athlete must meet both academic and athletic requirements, such as being in at least their 2nd year of eligibility and maintaining an average cum. GPA of 3.50 or higher. Additionally, student-athletes must have rowed in their institution's NCAA or IRA (lightweight) eligible boats for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or race in an NCAA Boat at their Conference Championship/NCAA Championship.
Of the 1,000+ to earn these honors, 103 student-athletes had perfect 4.00 or high GPAs. 55% of the award winners have average cumulative GPAs of 3.75 of higher!
The seven Gaels included on the CRCA list were:
Ka'Nayah Landers-Daniels Performance & Theatre Arts 3.78
Emily Ferbet MA in Communications 4.00
Katherine Ferbet MA in Kinesiology 3.61
Emma Scanlan Allied Health Science 3.54
Hathaway Scarpine Environmental Studies 3.85
Madison Sciba History 3.62
Alyssa Teague Psychology 3.57
All seven of these Gaels were included were included on the WCC's All-Academic Team's Honorable Mentions list as well.
SMC Rowing are coming off another solid season on the water and a first under new head coach Brian Ebke. The team is full of leaders both in the boats and in the classroom, and their recognition to the CRCA list shows how important academic success is here at Saint Mary's.
At the WCC Championships back at the beginning of June, SMC finished 6th overall for the second year running, but their rapid improvement in speed and times show promise for years to come.
The Gaels will be busy during the off-season getting ready for the upcoming season, which will quickly be upon them will exhibition races this fall.
