

GOLF | GCAA Honors Gaels Academic Success

NORMAN, Okla. – Saint Mary's Golf received more academic honors this week, this time from the Golf Coaches Association of America. Ethan Ashbrook, Kristian Bressum, and Mitchell Hoey were all named GCAA All-America Scholars, and the team as a whole received the President's special recognition for a team GPA above a 3.5.
To be eligible for GCAA All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA. In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Bressum is majoring in psychology and the sophomore had a 3.309 GPA in 2022-23. His season highlights on the links include finishing third at the SMC Invitational after he shot a 67 on day three, a 69 on day two, and a 73 in round one on the par 71 course to finish 4-under par at 209 strokes overall.
The Randers, Denmark native finished 2-under par at the John A. Burns Invitational at 214 strokes overall for the tournament, and he rocketed up the leaderboard with a 72 in the final round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, where he finished at 219 strokes over three rounds on the par-three course to get to 29th of 115 golfers. He finished 4-under par at the Ping Cougar Classic hosted by BYU at 212 strokes, was 4-under on par fours, and was the top Gael in birdies made with 14.
Ashbrook had a sparkling 3.9 GPA this year, as the senior majored in Finance at SMC. His best showing was when he finished 1-under par in round three at the 2023 Lamkin San Diego Classic, putting him 27th of 95 golfers. The Santa Maria, Calif. saved his best for last in his solid, steady performance, and finished at 218 strokes overall while making birdie 12 times, good for 10th among all golfers.
Hoey had a 3.279 GPA as a business administration major in his sophomore year at SMC. The De La Salle High product participated in all 13 tournaments for the Gaels and averaged 73.08 strokes per tournament. He finished tied for 11th at the Ping Cougar Classic for his top finish of the season, where he shot 7-under par in the third round. That 7-under par (65) was the lowest score posted in a tournament for the Gaels all season. He also had a strong finish at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate shooting 5-under par in round two and 3-under in round three to finish tied for 14th of 83 golfers at 211 strokes.
The Gaels will begin their season in at the Island Resort Intercollegiate hosted by South Dakota State at the Sage Run Golf Course in Bark River, Mich.
