MORAGA, Calif. – Following the Saint Mary's Women's Soccer 2-1 win over Idaho State on Sunday, sophomore forward Tessa Salvestrin has been awarded the Saint Mary's Player of the Week Award for her two-goal performance.
Salvestrin was a pest for defenders all afternoon, as she attacked the Idaho State back line for all 90 minutes.
Both her goals came in quick succession, with the first coming in the 23rd minute and the second just three minutes later in the 26th.
For the first goal, Emily Jensen played a great outlet pass to Briana Salvetti charging down the wing. Salvetti then chipped a perfect pass to Tessa Salvestrin who guided the ball into the back of the net to open the scoring and give the Gaels a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
Just three minutes later, the Gaels doubled their lead thanks to another Tessa Salvestrin goal. Once again, a great pass from Emily Jensen found Briana Salvetti who launched a perfect cross into the box to find the wide-open head of Salvestrin, giving SMC a 2-0 in the 26th minute.
Salvestrin worked tirelessly throughout the rest of the match, eagerly searching for the hattrick. A few half chances came her way in the second half, but the Idaho State keeper was determined to not allow a third.
Salvestrin and the Gaels will be back on the field this week as they hit the road for two away games. Saint Mary's will face UC Davis on Thursday, August 24 at 5 PM before facing off against Stanford on Sunday, August 27 at 1 PM.
