The Gaels finished round one with a solid team score of 275 (-9) led by junior Aidan Lee who continued his solid play after winning the Mark Simpson Invitational last week. Right behind him was sophomore Avery Lazarski who has been a part of the team's starting five in every tournament this season. Lazarski led Saint Mary's with six birdies in round one to finish with a 68 (-3). Despite a solid first round, the course was very gettable all day long and the Gaels sat in 10th place with the afternoon round to follow.
In round two, all four counting scores would finish in red figures and this time senior Zack Missigman would lead the charge with a stellar 64 (-7), recording eight birdies and just one bogey for a near flawless second round. His 7-under performance would go down as a new career low as he helped catapult the Gaels into fifth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Gaels finished the final round in red figures but dropped three spots into 8th place out of the 15-team field. Aidan Lee and Zack Missigman continued their solid play with top-20 finishes to lead the team's starting five and junior transfer Go Nakatsukasa put together his best showing this season with a t-18th finish as the team's lone individual in the event. Nakatsukasa had the second lowest round for the Gaels on Tuesday posting a 67 (-4) with six birdies.
Lee jumped 13 spots in the final round with an impressive 66 (-5), tying the team lead with six birdies on the day. Connor Reis, Zack Missigman and Ian Bruchhauser were the other four counting scores for the Gaels along with Lee to give them a final round score of 277 (-7).
After his best event of the fall season, Nakatsukasa would get rewarded and take over the number one spot in the Gaels lineup this week. Reis, Missigman, Lee and Lazarski round out the rest of the starting lineup and Ian Bruchhauser and James Williams will compete as individuals in the team's fall finale.
"We are looking forward to getting back to competition this week in Monterey," said Gaels head coach Scott Hardy. "Bayonet is in great shape this week and is a challenging course that will make for a competitive event. I look forward to watching the guys compete and chasing for the win to conclude the fall season" (Hardy).
Round one of the Golf and Leadership Collegiate Championship will tee off on Monday, October 21st at 8:20 AM. Full tournament results and recaps can be found at smcgaels.com.
