WBB | Gaels Take On Portland, The Defending Conference Tournament Champs, For A Second Time This Season

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Women's Basketball team will be back home at UCU Pavilion this Saturday to take on the Portland Pilots for the second time this season.
The Gaels took the defending conference tournament champions into overtime, defeating them 73-67 with Zaryhia Aokuso hitting a floater with 25 seconds left in regulation. Not only did the freshman give the Gaels the chance to win, she also had a career high of 24 points.

Saint Mary's Women's basketball secured a 74-67 victory last Saturday afternoon against the Santa Clara Broncos.
SMC shot 48.1% from FG in the first half, compared to Santa Clara's 34.5%. Zeryhia Aokuso was the only player in double digits at the half, with 10 points on 71.4% FG. Maia Jones was close behind her, with nine points, after shooting 3-4 from deep.
The Gaels and Broncos traded baskets all third quarter, and Tayla Dalton knocked down a floater at the buzzer to tie the game 50-50 going into the final frame.
Jones hit a step-back jumper and sank two free throws to keep the Gaels up 56-53, and Aokuso's layup pushed the lead to six with 1:24 left in the game. In the final minute, Santa Clara was able to cut the lead to three, but Aokuso's six clutch free throws and the Gaels strong defense in the final minute kept the Broncos away.
Maia Jones finished the game with 22 points after shooting 57.1% (4 of 7) from the three point line and 7 of 11 from the floor for a career day. Aokuso finished just three puts off her career mark with 21, but did have a career-high seven rebounds.
ABOUT PORTLAND
The Pilots have held three teams this season to under 50 points, one being against a Division I opponent. The team's leading scorer is Junior Maisie Burnham with 247 points followed by another Junior, Emme Shearer, with 243 points. Shearer has reached over 900 points in her career and has 62 blocks this season with the Pilots.
This season, Portland holds the most Freshman of the Week honors of any WCC schools with Ananiev Takes securing five. This is the most Freshman of the Week honors that the Pilots have ever won. Takes is averaging 8.4 points per game, 1.4 steals, and one block per game. She is second among all freshmen in points per game and is one of two players in the conference to rank in the top 11 in both blocks and steals per game.
