SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Rowing team competed in their first race of the Spring season at the Sac State Invite.
The Gaels first varsity eight consist of
Kendall Brazeel as the bow, Maria Moreno, Katie Ferbet,
Hathaway Scarpine, Hanna Kuegler,
Katelyn Robertson,
Carolyn Huckel,
Natalie Sanchez as the stroke, and
Skye Kirsten as the coxswain. This boat took second place with a time of 6:51.0, 4.4 seconds faster than West Coast Conference competitor Portland.
The second set of varsity eight was only 0.9 seconds shy of taking first place, coming in at a time of 7:09.6 behind Sac State. The members of this boat were
Alyssa Terry as the bow, Val Hill,
Maggie Farritor,
Ava Delucchi,
Olivia Watson,
Alyssa Teague,
Faith Freligh,
Danijela Concion as the stroke, and
Madison Sciba as the coxswain. This set also took second place and included two first year walk-ons.
The varsity four who competed for the Gaels were
Naomi Seivold as the bow,
Ilayda Ozbilgin,
Madison Ciccolella,
Kaitlin Quezon as the stroke, and
Skye Kirsten as the coxswain. The boat completed its race and finished in third.
SMC put out a novice four boat that held Maria Moreno as the bow,
Katelyn Robertson, Hanna Kuegler,
Natalie Sanchez as the stroke, and SKye Kirsten as the coxswain.

Brian Ebke after the race "Today was a great step forward for our whole program. The varsity eights had some really exciting racing and finished second, ahead of conference competitor Portland. The varsity four that included two first year walk-ons came away with valuable race experience and we're really excited about their future. We ended the day with a big win in the novice four, highlighting four freshmen from our top eight who have brought a lot of energy to the team in their first year."
The team will be competing again next weekend against Sacramento State.
