SAN JOSE, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball scored six runs on two, three-run home runs in the eighth inning to win 7-1 over San Jose State and even the season series with the Spartans.
Â
Three long balls accounted for all of SMC's scoring, with a solo home run from
Dalton Mashore to tie it at 1-1, and three-run blasts from
Christian Almanza and Connor "Bear" Harrison in the eighth to get the win.
Â
The Gaels bats were quiet until Mashore's solo home run in the sixth, but
Dylan Delvecchio went three innings and allowed just one run in his start.
Ryan Wiltse would come in for the fourth inning, and throw four perfect innings with six strikeouts to collect the win in by getting SMC into the eighth still tied up at 1-1.
Â
Mashore's home run came with one out in the sixth off SJSU pitcher Jesse Gutierrez. It was a no-doubt blast to left for Mashore's fifth of the season and got SMC on the board. The Gaels would threaten in the seventh when Chris Exquivel singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. But the Spartans' Drew Stapleton would get a ground out and fly out to end the inning.
Â
Aiden Taurek singled to start the eighth, and with two outs the Spartans intentionally walked
Ryan Pierce after falling behind in the count to the Gaels' dangerous third baseman. But SMC would counter that move by pinch hitting last year's WCC Co-Player of the Year,
Christian Almanza.
Â
After getting the first seven innings off on Tuesday evening, Almanza pummeled a ball over the batter's eye in center for a three-run homer (8) for a 4-1 SMC lead. Joey Cammarata would replace Stapleton for SJSU, but the Gaels would start a whole new two-out rally.
Â
Esquival and
Brian Duroff walked, and Harrison belted a pitch to left (5) for Saint Mary's second three-run home run of the inning, and were up 7-1.
Â
Preston Howey would come in for the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters over those two innings.
