ROME, Italy — The Saint Mary's women's basketball summer Foreign Tour hit the midway point of the trip, bringing new adventures to the capital city of Rome. The Gaels spent Saturday as a travel day, stopping in Siena on their way to Rome, where they will play the final two games of the tour.
On Sunday, the Gaels had an early excursion, touring the iconic Colosseum as a team, followed by the Roman Forum. Saint Mary's had a guided tour of both historic sites before a pre-game meal, in preparation for the game.
"I thought today was amazing. It was really cool to hear about all the history and seeing what it used to be like and being able to experience that as a team was amazing," Sophomore Maia Jones said.
In its second game of the tour, Saint Mary's once again applied pressure and played fast the entire game, leading to a 68-37 victory over Basket Roma in Rome.
The Gaels had another balanced scoring attack, but got a boost from Kennedy Johnson in the second half, when she scored all of her game-high 15 points. Johnson did it all in the second half, knocking down a 3-pointer, went four-for-four from the free throw line and added three rebounds.
Saint Mary's hit five 3-pointers in the game, led by Ella Wedin's three 3-pointers, as Wedin finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Maia Jones added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Gaels.
The presence inside was led by freshman Edie Clarke, who had eight points and nine rebounds and transfer Melesungu Afeaki who had six points and four rebounds.
Saint Mary's led 33-22 at half, but held Basket Roma to only 15 points over the final 20 minutes of the game.
"We definitely improved from the first game. This was a better team than we played the first game and we still managed to get the win and stick together. Our energy and our connectively just keeps getting better as we get to know each other more on this trip. It's looking great and I'm excited for the upcoming season," Jones added.
