WBB | Gaels Drop Nail-Biter in WCC Opener, 59-63 to Pilots
12/28/2025 5:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's led over half an hour Sunday afternoon, holding the second highest scoring offense in the WCC to just 63 points, but a quiet fourth quarter allowed Portland to snatch a four-point victory in the 2025-26 conference opener. The three ball proved pivotal for the Pilots, hitting nine on the night at 40% compared to just four at 23% for Saint Mary's.
Sophomore forward Edie Clarke led all scorers with a career high 18 points for her first double-digit game since Thanksgiving break against North Texas. Addi Wedin had eight points and six boards while Abigail Shoff and Jada Hunter combined for 12 points off the bench. Despite recording their second lowest turnover total of the season, the Gaels shot just 39% from the field and 55% from the free throw line, leaving some chances out on the floor. They'll turn around within 48 hours to take on Oregon State on Tuesday, December 30th at 5:00 PM.
FIRST HALF SMC 35-33 POR
Portland worked a full court press for much of the game but Saint Mary's did a great job of moving the ball and breaking that press, finishing the first quarter 8-of-16 from the field and holding a lead as many as eleven points. Edie Clarke went to work inside, scoring nine points in the opening ten minutes. Despite controlling much of the period, the Pilots went on a flurry over the final sixty seconds, going on a 7-0 run while forcing a pair of turnovers. The Pilots shot just 35% from the field but hit a pair of three's and closed strong to cut the deficit to four.
Saint Mary's would score back-to-back buckets to start the second quarter thanks to Clarke and Emily Foy to push their lead to eight. The Gaels were still breaking the press at an efficient rate and getting good looks inside, shooting 44% from the field in the period, but Portland cashed in with three three-pointers to make it a two-point game at the half. Addi Wedin hit her first three of the game at the six-minute mark to give Saint Mary's a six-point lead off a feed from Malia Latu. The Pilots closed the half well again, finishing the second quarter on a 4-0 run and nearly tied the game on a last second layup but the shot would be waived off after replay review. Clarke led all scorers with 13 points while Addi Wedin and Jada Hunter combined for 10 points in the half.
FINAL SMC 59-63 POR
The scoring continued for both teams in the third but Saint Mary's would hit a pair of three's and go perfect from the line to take a four-point lead into the fourth. The fourth quarter has always been a pivotal one for the Gaels this season, holding leads against Cal, Oregon and North Texas during their four-game skid but failing to close out any of those contests. Both teams combined for just 20 points over the final ten minutes but Portland did just enough, scoring 14 points on 45% shooting while holding Saint Mary's to just six points on 16% shooting.
The first points of the fourth quarter wouldn't come until the 6:52 mark as the Pilots went on an eventual 7-0 scoring run to force a timeout from Jeff Cammon and take a 56-53 lead. Saint Mary's continued to attack the paint and get good looks but were just 2-of-5 from the free throw line in the fourth, leaving crucial points on the board. Abigail Shoff hit a jumper at the 1:16 mark to cut the deficit to two and then the Gaels got a huge turnover thanks to Charlece Ohiaeri with 29 seconds remaining. After a timeout and the Gaels just down two, they would get a look inside but Shoff had her jumper blocked and Portland would play the free throw game to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's saw their four-game win streak come to an end, falling to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play. They will turn around and host Oregon State on Tuesday, December 30th at 5:00 PM. Tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets and you can catch all the action live on ESPN+.
