WBB | Foy and Shoff Combine for 29 but Gaels Fall Late to End WCC Opening Week 0-2
12/30/2025 8:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. - There was more good littered all over the stat sheet again Tuesday night but Saint Mary's fell in another close contest, 57-63 to the 2025 WCC Champs Oregon State to end week one of conference play 0-2. Emily Foy led the Gaels with 15 points in the starting lineup and Abigail Shoff even chipped in 14 of her own off the bench, but Oregon State shot 55% from the field in the fourth quarter good for 25 points and also went a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line to ice the game late.
The turnovers were down again for the Gaels but they shot under 40% from the field for the second consecutive game, the first time that's happened all season. They were also 8-for-14 from the charity stripe to aid a six-point win for the Beavers. Despite the consecutive defeats to start WCC play, Saint Mary's has put together a lot of good basketball, leading for a combined 40:32 over the two games and holding their opponents to just 63.0 points per game. The Gaels will head south for their first conference road trip to take on Pepperdine on Friday, January 2nd and San Diego on Sunday the fourth.
FIRST HALF SMC 25-29 OSU
After falling down 7-2 over the first three minutes of the opening quarter, head coach Jeff Cammon and his group responded with an 8-0 run featuring buckets from Edie Clarke, Abigail Shoff and Emily Foy to take a 10-7 lead. Saint Mary's shot 50% from the field in the first quarter to take a 17-12 lead. Shoff caught fire and ended the period with seven points off the bench while Foy was 2-for-2 with four points.
One thing the Gaels have struggled with all season is putting together four complete quarters and they stumbled again tonight, getting outscored 17-8 in the second period to go down 29-25 at the half. Oregon State only shot 35% from the field but got to the line, making five of six free throws in the second quarter to contribute to their 17 points. Saint Mary's was just 4-for-14 in the period but limited their turnovers to keep them within striking distance.
FINAL SMC 57-63 OSU
A 4-0 run out of the gate knotted the game at 29. Emily Foy got downhill to bank in a layup and take the contact for the old school three-point play. All four points came off the same possession as the Gaels got the offensive rebound off a missed free throw from Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and then Edie Clarke corralled another o-board and found Foy cutting to the hoop for two. Saint Mary's held the Beavers to nine points on 36% shooting in the period to take a 39-38 lead into the fourth.
Back-to-back buckets from Shoff and Maila Latu to start the fourth would extend their lead to five points. Oregon State would come right back and tie the game at 45 with a three-point play of their own. Emily Foy connected on a three-pointer with 1:47 remaining to cut the deficit to one but junior point guard Kennedie Shuler finished through contact for the and-one to put the Beavers up four with 48 seconds remaining. Oregon State would go a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter alone to ice the game and seal the 63-57 victory. Before fouling out, Edie Clarke finished with nine points and six rebounds. Emily Foy was just one point shy of her season high, leading the team with 15 points and four boards. Abigail Shoff made her impact felt off the bench for the Gaels, matching her season high with 14 points and five rebounds. Malia Latu added six points and Jada Hunter had four off the bench.
