MORAGA, Calif. - On Tuesday, July 16th, Saint Mary's very own Preston Howey was taken in the 2024 MLB draft as the 416th pick in the 14th round to the Detroit Tigers, representing the program's lone draft pick following the 2024 season. Howey stands as a seasoned right handed relief pitcher with plenty of collegiate experience and over 100 innings pitched in his four years as a Gael. The Arcadia native only got better with time as he put up career numbers this season including wins (4), ERA (4.26), innings pitched (38.0), strikeouts (51) and saves (5).
Howey was the team's primary closer and backend option but also made eight appearances with multiple innings of work including a season high five innings where he shutout Pepperdine and picked up his fourth win of the season in a 4-3 Gaels victory (5/5). Howey is the program's first draft pick since 2022 when three Gaels were taken and he will attempt to join an elite group of nearly 100 program alums who have gone on to make their MLB debut.

"Preston was a four year vet for us and only got better throughout his career. He has great versatility out of the pen and we're excited to see him continue to develop in the big leagues. Howey concluded his Gaels career with 72 appearances, 107 innings pitched and eight saves, tied for ninth most in program history.
