BARK RIVER, Mich. - Saint Mary's took advantage of great conditions in the final round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate to shoot a tournament low 14-under-par to jump SEC member Georgia for sole possession of third place. All four counting scores were under par for the Gaels and they were led by a stellar 66(-6) from Connor Reis who had yet to record a round under par heading into the final day. Zack Missigman had also failed to get into red figures prior to today's round but was the team's next best finisher at 4-under-par. The team's 274 (-14) final round was the lowest single round performance since breaking the program record in 2023 when they recorded a 266 (-22) at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational.
"The guys fought hard after a slow start to round one to move all the way up the leaderboard into 3rd place" said head coach Scott Hardy. "We battled high winds on the opening day but stayed patient and focused".
Go Nakatsukasa and Avery Lazarski were the other two counting scores for Saint Mary's as Nakatsukasa recorded his lowest round of the event at 3-under-par and finished the event with back-to-back rounds of under par. Lazarski recorded his second round of 1-under-par to finish the event in red figures and round out the team's scoring. Aidan Lee was not far off though as he shot an even 72 to close out his weekend for the Gaels.
Reis's 6-under performance catapulted him into the top-10 as he was the team's top finisher at 3-under-par good for 8th place individually. As the team's lone individual, Ian Bruchhauser recorded his second straight round under par with a 69 (-3) to jump into a tie for 27th place out of nearly 80 golfers in the field.
"Hanging tough on day one allowed us to come out today and take advantage of good scoring conditions and put up a ton of birdies. Clutch putts on the last hole pushed the team ahead of Georgia and cemented a nice start to the season" (Hardy).
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's will take two weeks off before heading to the Pacific Northwest to compete in the Husky Invitational hosted by Washington starting on September 23rd.
