ERIE, Colo. - What a first day for the Saint Mary's men's golf team as they finished the first two rounds of the Mark Simpson Invitational at 22-under par and sit in second place heading into the final round on Tuesday. All four counting scores for the Gaels were in red figures for round one and Zack Missigman sat atop of the individual leaderboard with a stellar round of 7-under par. Also flooding the top of the individual leaderboard after the opening round were teammates Aidan Lee and Avery Lazarski. Lee was right behind Missigman at 6-under and Lazarski finished with four birdies and an eagle to record an opening round of 67 (-5). Lee also recorded a pair of eagles on the day to start his first round 6-under through his first six holes.
The Gaels concluded round one at 20-under par, just two strokes off of their single round program record of 22-under which they recorded last season at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational. In the afternoon round, Saint Mary's ran out of a bit of steam and finished 2-under with Lee and Missigman as the lone golfers to record rounds under par. Veteran Connor Reis battled through his second round and was able to record two birdies in his last five holes to pull his way back to even par. They would fall out of first place but remained just five strokes off the lead as tournament host Colorado stormed back with an impressive 14-under second round to take the lead heading into Tuesday.
