WTEN | Weekley Goes Undefeated to Represent Saint Mary’s at Cal Winter Invite

BERKELEY, Calif. - Third year Gael Madison Weekley led the charge for Saint Mary's as she finished the Cal Winter Invite undefeated, 3-0 in singles play and 1-0 in a doubles match victory over Cal Poly. As a team the Gaels finished the three-day event with an 8-15 overall record but wrapped up the weekend on a high note with a pair of singles victories from Madison Weekley and Juliette Daries on Sunday.

On the opening day, the lone wins for Saint Mary's came from Weekley in a singles match win in straight sets over Cal Poly's Anushree Shekhera (6-3, 7-5) followed by a doubles win with Stefanie Silva and Juliette Daries taking down Natalie Lynch/Anushree Shekhera from Cal Poly (6-2).

Saturday was highlighted by a pair of doubles victories over host Cal and Cal Poly. Iman Khan and Olivia Rook took down Greta Greco Lucchina and Lan Mi from Cal (6-4) and then Juliette Daries and Madison Weekley defeated Alexandra Ozerets and Anushree Shukhera from Cal Poly (6-3).

The weekend concluded with a doubles win from juniors Tiana Fox and MiaAngelina Ruja, 7-5 over Alexandra Ozerets and Sarah MacCallum from Cal Poly. Daries and Weekley added a pair of singles wins to give the Gaels a 2-1 record in singles play for the day. Daries was 3-3 on the weekend with two doubles and a singles victory.

"Great weekend getting matches under our belt" said head coach Katharina Winterhalter. "We faced some strong competition in Cal and Cal Poly and got some solid wins in doubles. Madison had a strong weekend and we got some good performances from players coming back from injury. We're excited to have a couple weeks to prepare for our first home dual match against UC Davis" (Winterhalter).
