MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's Men's Cross Country team is heading north to take on the Bill Dellinger Invitational hosted by University of Oregon on October 10th. The meet will take place at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Springfield, Oregon, just about 10 miles northeast of Oregon's campus in Eugene.
The Gaels head into the race after finding solid success at the Pacific Invitational, where they came in third out of six competing teams. The results marked SMC's second straight top five team finish this year, and their second best finish at this meet, which they have competed in every year since 2021. In addition, the Gaels top five finishers all earned their personal best times in the 8k. It was freshman Anthony Sharp who led the way for Saint Mary's. Sharp improved his personal best time by over a minute clocking in at 25:38.4 and finished the race in 10th overall. Following one spot behind him in eleventh place was Andrew Perez, crossing the finish line in 25:48.8. Finishing third and fourth for the Gaels were freshmen Jackson Woolf (25.54.3) and Jacob Schuetze (26:08.4). Diego Urdiales rounded out the Gaels scoring, finishing the race in 26:38.7 in 28th place.
Competing in Springfield, Oregon is an older group of Gaels including graduate students Oisin Spillane, Foster Wilfong, Jon Fielding Stogner, Jonathan Velasco, and Zane Jackson, joined by seniors Anthony Erikson, Eric Martinez, Jason Habash, and Noah Paragan, with juniors
Divan Du Plooy and Jacob Moffett, and lone sophomore Aidan Doherty. Of this group, Divan Du Plooy has the quickest 8k time, which he earned when competing for South Plains College at the 2023 NJCAA Region V Championships, clocking in at 23:15.2.
Friday's race will mark the Gaels third straight year competing at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. Last season, Saint Mary's finished 13th of 15 teams with Zane Jackson leading the team and finishing in 52nd. Jackson and Moffett are both returning to the Bill Dellinger Invitational for their second consecutive year.
The Gaels will take to the course at 11:15 AM on Friday, October 10th. Athletes will race entirely on grass and mostly on fairways. The course consists of two relatively flat loops—an outer loop, and a finish loop. The outer loop is approximately 2320 meters in length, and the finishing loop is approximately 1350 meters in length. Runners will complete two loops of the outer loop and two of the finishing loop.
