MORAGA, Calif. — After a tense, back and forth battle, the Saint Mary's Women's Soccer team came out on top with a 1-0 victory over Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers challenged the West Coast Conference's now top ranked Gaels throughout the entire match, but a late strike from Saint Mary's leading goal scorer Sydney Middaugh in the 87th minute proved to be the difference. The goal marked Middaugh's eighth of the season, moving her into sole possession of third place in WCC goal scoring.
FIRST HALF SMC 0 - 0 PAC
Within the first 45 minutes of play, Saint Mary's outshot Pacific 11-3 but struggled to convert their chances. The Tigers nearly capitalized off of a dangerous counterattack late in the half, but goalkeeper Kate Plachy came up with a crucial save to keep the match level heading into halftime.
FINAL SMC 1 - 0 PAC
The Gaels continued to press offensively in the second half, and their persistence finally paid off. With just about three minutes remaining, Brooklyn Smith delivered a perfectly placed ball to Sydney Middaugh just inside the 18-yard box, and the junior calmly snuck it past the Tigers' goalkeeper to give the Gaels the lead late in the game.
With the result, Saint Mary's improved to 11-2-3 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play. For the moment, they have moved past Pepperdine for the top spot in the conference standings but the Waves are still finalizing their match in Pullman against Washington State. Plachy recorded her 11th shutout of the season, earning her second in single-season program history. Full game efforts from Amari Hicks, Molly Silva, Savannah Schwarze, Madison Casado, Maddie Lucas, and Aleiyah Schexnayder anchored another strong performance and a huge win for the Gaels.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's wraps up West Coast Conference play next week, beginning with a road matchup at Oregon State on Wednesday, November 5th at 5:00 PM. The Gaels then return home for Senior Day against Santa Clara on Saturday, November 8th, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 PM. Both games can be streamed live on ESPN+ and tickets can be purchased at smcgaels.com.
