WBB | Efficient Scoring and Gritty Defense Gives Saint Mary’s 3-Point Win Over Fresno State
12/10/2025 10:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's returned to UCU Pavilion for the first time in 24 days and were able to hold off Fresno State 60-57 to extend their win streak to three games and improve to 8-4 overall on the season. Offensive efficiency and elite defense have carried the Gaels all season long and they did more of that Wednesday night as they shot 48% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc, their ninth game of the season surpassing the 40% shooting mark.
The Wedin sisters combined to go 5-for-5 from three-point range as Addi led the Gaels with 17 points on 6-7 shooting and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Emily Foy returned to the starting lineup and finished with ten points and a whopping +13 while on the floor in her 28 minutes of action. Head coach Jeff Cammon went 13 players deep as the Gaels outscored the Bulldogs 27-16 in bench points and were also +12 on the glass with a team high eight boards from senior guard Malia Latu. The Gaels will close out their non-conference slate on Saturday, December 20th as they host New Mexico State for just the second time in program history.
FIRST HALF SMC 29-28 FS
Saint Mary's led by as many seven points in the first quarter, finishing with 19 points on 60% shooting, but a pair of late buckets from Fresno State including a three-pointer as time expired cut the deficit to just two points. Addi Wedin cashed in with a pair of three-pointers in the opening period along with four points inside from Emily Foy. The opening ten minutes were some of the best of the season as the Gaels turned the ball over only three times and made every offensive possession count, hitting six shots, a [air of three's as well as five free throws.
Scoring slowed down for both teams in the second quarter, combining for just 21 points. Both teams were scoreless over the final two minutes after the Bulldogs converted a layup to make it a one-point game. Despite just eleven points in the quarter for the Gaels, they held Fresno State to just 33% from the field to retain a 29-28 lead at the half.
FINAL SMC 60-57 FS
The game went small for both teams in the second half but the Gaels were able to showcase their depth and talent in their backcourt with the likes of Jada Hunter, Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Malia Latu. Hashemian-Orr did well to attack the rim and finished the third quarter with five points as Saint Mary's doubled their bench points in the period while also adding ten points in the paint.
Just under the three-minute mark, Saint Mary's got a pair of huge scoring plays from Hashemian-Orr and Ella Wedin to push their lead to six. Hashemian-Orr finished through contact for the and-one while Ella Wedin hit a pick-and-pop three to give the Gaels a 46-40 advantage.
Ella Wedin finished with six points in just five minutes of action on the night but had two of the biggest buckets of the game as she kicked off the fourth quarter with another catch-and-shoot three-pointer to give the Gaels a seven-point lead. Despite dictating much of the second half, turnovers began to plague the Gaels as they coughed it up 13 times in the second half to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance.
The Gaels led by five with 13 seconds remaining but a desperation three would find its way in off the glass to cut the deficit to two with nine seconds on the clock. Addi Wedin would get fouled and split her free throws, leaving the door open for Fresno State to tie the game. Edie Clarke, Charlece Ohiaeri and Melesungu Afeaki would come into the game though as a defensive package and force a deep three-point attempt that failed to draw iron, sealing the 60-57 home win.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's improved to 8-4 overall after their 60-57 victory over Fresno State, improving to 8-1 all-time against the Bulldogs when playing at home. The Gaels will host New Mexico State on Saturday, December 20th at 2:00 PM for their final non-conference game of the season. Tickets can be purchased online at smcgaels.com/tickets.
