ROW | Gaels Win Five of Nine Races at the George Washington Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. — It was a great weekend for Saint Mary's Rowing, who took to the racecourse on the Potomac nine times, winning five races. With just one more event until the conference championship, the Gaels are rounding into great shape for one of their best ever finishes in the ever competitive WCC.

The two day event began Friday morning, with the Gaels picking up two wins to start the day over Old Dominion in both the 1v8 and 2v8 races. The Gaels first varsity eight boat bested ODU by nearly ten seconds, while the second varsity eight held off the Monarchs for a near five second victory. The varsity fours rounded out day one with a clean sweep of Old Dominion, winning their race with a seven second victory.

The Gaels rounded out the event Saturday with races against Georgetown and George Washington, both rowing in their home city of Washington DC. The first varsity eight boat made it two wins in two races to open the day against Georgetown with a 6.5 second victory. The Hoyas bested the Gaels second varsity eight boat and varsity four boat. The final races of the day featured the Gaels and host George Washington University. This time, it was the varsity four boat who stole the show, with a tremendous performance, to win their race by 19 seconds. The first varsity eight were narrowly edged out by a 3.29 second margin, the tightest of any Gaels race in the event, while the second varsity eight also fell to GWU.

"We had an amazing weekend in Washington DC and the team did a great job of coming out here ready to race and learn," noted Head Coach Brian Ebke, "We started off the racing on a great note, with all 3 boats beating a strong ODU team. On Sunday our 1V 8+ beat Georgetown, and our 1V 4+ beat GW, both really significant wins for us against great programs." He went on to say, "The trip was a big success and we're really proud of how we represented Saint Mary's on the East Coast against some strong rowing schools. We had a big fan base with parents, friends, and alums coming out to support our team and it was awesome to see Gael gear, flags, and spirit all the way across the country. We have some exciting racing in Chula Vista up next and the team is ready and excited to find more speed in the next 2 weeks."

As Coach Ebke alluded to, the Gaels will round out their regular season at the Triton Invitational in Chula Vista, hosted by UC San Diego. The event will take place from April 26 through April 27.
