MORAGA, Calif. - Third year shortstop
Jared Mettam led the team in hits and doubles this past week as he helped the Gaels to their second ever WCC Tournament Championship, earning him this week's Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the week award.
Mettam has played in 51 of the team's 59 games as the team's primary shortstop and has been one of the team's top hitters over the last month of the season. He ended the conference tournament with a team high .526 batting average, recording ten hits, four doubles, a home run while driving in seven runs. Mettam had a three-run homer in the first game of the tournament against San Francisco and then had a pair of doubles in the team's 14-inning affair with San Diego.Â
Mettam recorded a tournament high three hits twice against Gonzaga and San Diego. He scored a run and got on base four times in the championship game as the Gaels held off another late surge and defeated the Toreros 9-8 to secure the tournament title. Mettam was named to the WCC All-Tournament team for the first time in his career, leading the tournament with a .526 average and four doubles. Mettam has hits in eight of his last nine games dating back to May 11th, including five doubles and 13 RBI.Â
Saint Mary's will head to Corvallis for their second ever NCAA Regional appearance. They will take on eighth overall seed Oregon State on Friday, May 30th at 5:00 PM.
