BSB | Waldeck Hurls Career High 5+ but Gaels Fall 4-1 in Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team kicked off its five-game week on the road against UC Davis and despite striking first in the third inning, the Aggies came from behind to win 4-1 and end the Gaels three-game win streak Monday night.
Saint Mary's (17-14, 5-4 WCC) was 12-5 this season when scoring first but would add another game to the loss column in that category as the Aggies rallied late to score four runs over their last three at bats to snatch the 4-1 victory and end a six-game losing streak. Redshirt junior Noah Waldeck made just his second start of the season for the Gaels and was everything they needed and more, pitching a career high 5.2 innings allowing just two runs off six hits. The Gaels held a one-run lead after an RBI knock from Diego Castellanos in the third but UC Davis (12-17, 5-10 Big West) was able to bounce Waldeck from the game in the sixth and plate two runs to take the lead for good.
Saint Mary's outhit UC Davis 10-7 including a game high three hits from Makoa Sniffen. Brady Petit and Jared Mettam also had two-hit games for the Gaels as they recorded their 22nd game this season with 10+ hits. The pitching was solid again for head coach Eric Valenzuela and his staff but the Aggies just had a couple extra hits with runners in scoring position to swing the game, including a two-run homer in the eighth to seal the three-run victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Waldeck led the Gaels with 28 appearances a season ago, cracking the top-10 in program history for single-season appearances, and got his second start of 2026 Monday night. The SoCal native hadn't pitched more than three innings prior to Monday night but looked stellar, pitching to contact and pounding the zone to cruise through five scoreless innings.
Saint Mary's piled up the singles early on and were able to strike first off an RBI single from Diego Castellanos in the third inning. Despite the active bats, the Gaels were just 1-for-8 for the game with runners in scoring position as UC Davis hung around down just one.
The Aggies would break through with two-out magic in the sixth, rattling off three straight singles to tie the game at one. Waldeck would load the bases with a walk before departing for true freshman Jake Nobles. Nobles worked a full count but walked the first batter he saw to give the Aggies the 2-1 lead. He would induce a fly ball out the next at bat to end the threat with the Gaels right there, down just one run.
Saint Mary's was able to get a runner on base in each of the next three innings but struggled to find the equalizer. UC Davis put the game out of reach with a two-run homer in the eighth, helping seal the 4-1 home victory. Sniffen led the Gaels with a three-hit ballgame and is now hitting .344 from the plate with 43 hits this season. Brady Petit and Jared Mettam also had multi-hit games, each recording two hits to contribute to the ten hits as a team for the Gaels offense which leads the WCC with a .327 batting average.
