MBB | McConnell, Rahon and Sheets Named to Silver Waves Media 100 Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coach and GM List

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Every year for the last seven years, Silver Waves Media has announced their top 100 Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coach and GM List. This list has become the industry standard for excellence and is created after the consultation of a panel of industry professionals. This year's list features a trio of Gaels, as Mickey McConnell, Joe Rahon and Dan Sheets have all been named to this prestigious group.
A 2011 graduate of Saint Mary's and the 2011 WCC Player of the Year, Mickey McConnell joined the Saint Mary's Coaching Staff as an assistant coach for the 2019-20 season after a seven year professional career. Heading into the 2022-23 campaign, McConnell was promoted to Associate Head Coach. Since McConnell joined the staff, the Gaels have boasted a 163-52 record, including three straight WCC Title shares and four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Like McConnell, Joe Rahon was a standout point guard for the Gaels, graduating in 2017 after earning WCC Defensive Player of the Year honors. After spending three years playing professionally in Europe, Rahon was added on staff as the Recruiting Coordinator ahead of the 2021-22 season. In just one year in that role, Rahon helped the Gaels bring in the 2022-23 incoming group of Aidan Mahaney, Joshua Jefferson, Mason Forbes and Harry Wessels, and was then elevated to an assistant coach role in the 2022-23 season. After helping guide the Gaels to four straight NCAA Tournament berths in his first four years as an assistant, Rahon was promoted to join McConnell as an associate head coach ahead of this season.
A five year Gael on the court, Dan Sheets finished out his playing career in Moraga in 2020, and immediately joined on as a graduate assistant that Summer. After a season in that role, and two as the Gaels' Director of Basketball Operations, Sheets was promoted to assistant coach in 2023-24. The Gaels have known nothing but success since Sheets took on that role, winning a pair of outright WCC Regular Season Titles and amassing an impressive record of 70-18.
