Aggie Invite Results Sherwood Collegiate Cup Results

DAVIS/THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team split up for its opening weekend of fall competition and competed at both the Aggie Invite and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup down in Southern California. Second-year Head coach Dan Cardiff and his group came away with some solid performances as well as a combined four SMC debuts on the weekend.

AGGIE INVITE

A pair of freshmen and a junior transfer made their SMC debuts at the Aggie Invite over the weekend. Alabama transfer Brendan Loh made his doubles debut with second-year Gael Bastien Maxant where the duo saw a quarterfinals exit after a 4-8 defeat to Nevada. Loh also competed in the Singles Blue Flight where he picked up his first win as a Gael, defeating UC Davis' Cyrus Ahmad 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 to advance to the flight's semifinals. He would fall in straight sets to Pacific's Vraj Patel to conclude his weekend.

Freshmen Frano Sucic and Devin Stuppin made their collegiate debuts in Davis as well. The duo competed as doubles partners in the White Flight but fell to Sac State's duo 3-8. Stuppin fell in straight sets in his first singles match to Sac State's Thomas Ranson while Sucic fell in a hard fought three-set affair to UC Davis' Nadaul Cheam out of the Blue Flight. Highlighting the Gold Flight for the Gaels was senior Joey Lyon who secured a quarters victory over Pacific's Hasith Gummuluru, 6-3 2-6 7-6 (8-6).

The standout performance in Davis for the Gaels came from sophomore Bastien Maxant who surged to the semifinals in the Singles White Flight, defeating Santa Clara's Mahir Khurana in straight sets and then a three-set win over Menlo College's Eemil Pasanen to record a pair of wins on the weekend. He would ultimately fall to host Aiden Mueller 1-6 4-6 to conclude his weekend.

SHERWOOD COLLEGIATE CUP

Down in Southern California, Cardiff traveled with another group to compete in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup. The Gaels partook in a series of hidden duals first against the likes of Cal, UCLA and SMU. The opening day featured doubles competition from the Etchecoin brothers as well as a doubles debut from true freshman Alexander Gschiel who competed alongside junior Finn Dyer in a 2-4 defeat to SMU on Friday. Gschiel bounced back though in singles play with his first collegiate victory, defeating UCLA's Cassius Chinlund 7-6 7-6. Additional singles wins to end day one came from Dyer, 6-3 6-1 over SMU, and Paulo Hugo Etchecoin who defeated Cal's Benjamin Berger 6-4 6-7 11-9.

Saturday featured a team dual win over BYU which was highlighted by doubles victories from the Etchecoin brothers as well as Gschiel/Dyer for their first win of the fall season as a pair. Dyer, Gschiel and Juan Pedro Etchecoin all capped the day with singles wins. Dyer and JP won their matches in straight sets while Gschiel defeated BYU's Tygen Goldammer in three sets including a 7-5 tiebreaker win in the third to clinch the match.

Saint Mary's ended its weekend at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup with a 4-2 dual win over Cal out of the Silver Draw on Sunday. The doubles teams of Etchecoin and Gschiel/Dyer helped clinch the doubles point with a pair of wins while Gschiel and Juan Pedro Etchecoin won their singles matches in straight sets to end the weekend. True freshman Alexander Gschiel had quite the collegiate debut, going a combined 6-2 on the weekend including top line wins over UCLA, BYU and Cal.

LOOKING AHEAD

Saint Mary's will return to action with another pair of events including the Battle of the Bay starting on October 1 at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco and the NorCal Invitational Shootout which will be hosted at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex starting on October 3.
