EUREKA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's rowing team made a strong showing at the Blue Heron Humboldt Regatta on Saturday morning, with wins from the 1V8+, 3V8+, and 1V4+ boats.
The first win of the day for the Gaels came in the Women's Varsity 8 with the 1V8+ squad of coxswain Mavis Read-Kinney, Carolyn Huckel, Maria Moreno Roque, Fiona Samuelson, Katelyn Robertson, Lia Segrest, Danijela Concion, Chloe Casement, and Kelly Nelson. The boat overcame a significant equipment issue late in the race, but still took the race in 6:27.177, defeating Humboldt by just over 6 seconds. The 2V8+ boat put up a battle to the Humboldt 1V8+ boat, but narrowly fell to the Lumberjacks by just three seconds.
In the 2nd Varsity 8+ race, Saint Mary's 3V8+ boat of coxswain Sophia Camarosano, Emma Lopez, Fiona Moore, Sofia Martyniuk, Corinne McGrath, Alaynnah Flores, Gabriella Honig, Ashlynn Croarkin, and Claire Gonzalez took the victory in 6:46.480 minutes, winning the race by a 6 second margin.
Both the Women's Varsity 4+ boats came in first and second in the Gaels final race of the day. Coxswain Rachel Fry, Lilah Marble, Avery Britton, Gwyneth O'Brien, and Kate Hurd took the race in 8:16.328. The 2V4+ boat of coxswain Alondra Aguirre, Maya Nordberg, Alyssa Terry, Lea Glafkides, and Alexa Hernandez followed them in 8:21.097, beating Humboldt by over 14 seconds.
The Gaels novice 4+ boat with coxswain Sophia Cammarosano, Gabriella Honig, Alaynnah Flores, Ady Beloian, and Lucinda Santos took second place in their race, finishing behind Puget Sound and beating Humboldt by 27 seconds.
"We appreciate this race because Humboldt is a really good, consistent team at the top of the Division II ranks. We've raced them a lot in the last four years, so they are a good benchmark for us. We were excited to see our team step up, win a lot of races and compete a boat up for many of our boats" said Head Coach Brian Ebke. "We've had three races in a row with the whole team, and we've seen a lot of improvement in each boat class. It's especially fun to see our first year rowers getting more confident in their racing abilities!"
The Gaels will return to action on Saturday, April 4 for the Santa Clara Dual.
