SAN BRUNO, Calif. — After a sweep of Oregon State this past weekend, the Saint Mary's softball team sits firmly atop the West Coast Conference standings, with a 3.5 game lead over second place Santa Clara. Senior pitcher Odhi Vasquez had a hand in all three of those wins for the Gaels, and, as such, has been named WCC Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this year and 12th time in her illustrious career. Vasquez also earned this honor four times last year, to go along with being named WCC pitcher of the week three times as a sophomore and once as a freshman.
Vasquez got the nod in game one against the Beavers, looking to set the tone for the weekend. She did just that, going the distance and fanning eight in a tight 5-3 ballgame. The Gaels saw Oregon State take a 2-1 lead in the second inning of this one, but Vasquez remained steadfast in her resolve, giving up just one more run over the next five frames, and allowing her offense to rally behind her in the victory. In game two, Vasquez entered in relief in the sixth inning, looking to protect a two run lead. She worked two full frames, stranding five Oregon State runners on base, while the Gaels offense provided insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, helping Odhi to her WCC best fifth save in the 8-3 win. In the series finale, again, Vasquez was called on in relief, this time with one out in the seventh, ahead 8-2, but with the bases loaded. Vasquez induced a pair of ground balls in this one to end the game and preserve the sweep for the Gaels. She continues to lead the WCC in wins (17), saves (5), strikeouts (113) and WHIP (1.20), while her 2.27 ERA ranks third in the conference.
Vasquez and the Gaels will head to San Diego for a three game set against the Toreros of USD starting Friday, April 24.
