SB | Vasquez and Buckley Sweep WCC Weekly Awards for Second Time This Season

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — For the second time this season and fourth time in their careers, Odhi Vasquez and Sam Buckley have won West Coast Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively in the same week. The duo led the Gaels to a 2-1 weekend at Santa Clara, locking up the Gaels' second outright WCC Title and NCAA Regional Berth in three years. Buckley has now won this award nine times in her three years in Moraga, while Vasquez picks up her 13th weekly honor in her illustrious four-year career.
Sam Buckley earned her second consecutive WCC Player of the Week award after continuing to be a thorn in the side of opposing pitching. After going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's series opener against the Broncos, Buckley would earn six free passes in the remaining two games, being retired just once throughout the series. In total, she reached base 10 times in 11 plate appearances against the Broncos, scoring five times and driving in three. She is currently riding a season-long 11 game hit streak.
Odhi Vasquez appeared in two of the three contests for the Gaels this weekend in the circle. Entering the week needing just one win to lock up the WCC's automatic regional berth, Vasquez came out of the bullpen on Thursday night, tossing the final 2.2 innings of that one, surrendering just one unearned run, allowing the Gaels to put the tying run on-base in the seventh before ultimately falling in a narrow 4-3 contest. She came back on Friday, going the distance against the Broncos, surrendering just two runs while fanning eight in the regional berth clinching victory. Vasquez three times stranded the go-ahead run on-base against the Broncos, and, after Saint Mary's would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh, struck out the side in order in the bottom half to lock up her 50th career victory.
Buckley, Vasquez and the rest of the Saint Mary's softball team will be off to Eugene this week, taking part in the NCAA Regional, hosted by the University of Oregon. The Gaels' postseason run will begin on Friday night at 4:30 p.m. at Jane Sanders Stadium when they face Mississippi State.
