LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Saint Mary's women's soccer team opened up the 2026 season at Long Beach State on Wednesday evening, ending the match in a 0-0 draw.
Both teams showcased strong defensive efforts throughout the match, as the game remained scoreless through the full 90 minutes. Long Beach State led the shot attempts with ten, while the Gaels finished with seven as both teams walked away with a point in the 2026 season opener.
FIRST HALF SMC 0-0 LBSU
Saint Mary's started the game in control and created multiple dangerous chances early on. The Gaels racked up three shots in the first half, with two on target. The best look of the half came in the 30th minute when Brooklyn Smith fed Ashlyn Vaughn down the left side of the 18-yard box. The sophomore forward drove into the box before sending a shot just wide of the right post. On the other end, the Gaels remained composed defensively, limiting the Beach to just three shots to keep the match scoreless heading into the break.
FINAL SMC 0-0 LBSU
Saint Mary's remained strong defensively throughout the second half as the Beach tallied seven shots to the Gaels' four. Captain Molly Silva nearly found the breakthrough in the 80th minute, connecting on a corner kick from Natalie Mejia, sending a header that rattled off the post.
Full 90 minute efforts came from defenders Anna Emperador, Aleiyah Schexnayder, Faith Gunter and Molly Silva, along with forward Ashlyn Vaughn and midfielder Savannah Schwarze. Redshirt freshman Soraya Souvanaphong also made her collegiate debut in goal, getting the start Wednesday night. Souvanaphong was forced to make just one save over her 90 minutes but got credit for her first career clean sheet to kick off her SMc career.
With the draw, the Gaels extended their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games dating back to last season.
