WSOC | Schwarze and Jurasek Shine In Emphatic 4-0 Home Opening Win

MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's opened its 2026 home campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win versus Pac-12 member Fresno State, the Gaels' first victory in a home opener since 2023 when they took down CSU Bakersfield 1-0. The Gaels extended their unbeaten streak to eight games dating back to 2025 with today's 4-0 win, one shy of their unbeaten run a season ago in which they went nine games without a loss.
FIRST HALF SMC 1- FS 0
Saint Mary's started the match dominating possession, and nearly found a breakthrough in the 22nd minute when a Molly Silva shot deflected off the post, followed by a goal line clearance by Fresno State from an Ashlyn Vaughn goal-bound strike. It wasn't until the 38th minute when a scintillating cross from fifth-year senior Savannah Schwarze found the head of freshman Brianna Jurasek, her first collegiate goal and the first for Saint Mary's of the 2026 season. The defensive end remained strong through the first 45, holding the Bulldogs to zero shots and corner kicks while commanding possession.
FINAL SMC 4 - FS 0
The Gaels came out hot in the second half and quickly found the back of the net through a 51st-minute strike from sophomore Ashlyn Vaughn, her first goal of the season after an impressive freshman campaign. Savannah Schwarze recorded her second assist on the Vaughn strike, as well as a first assist of the season to senior Brooklyn Smith. It wasn't long before we heard Smith's name again after a strong touch and finish in the 64th minute and an impressive run and assist from redshirt junior Brittany Holden to make it 3-0 for the Gaels. Holden's run came off the buildup play of Savannah Schwarze, which accounted for her third assist of the day after a career-high five assists in the 2025 season alone. Schwarze now ranks tied for third all-time with 19 assists over her five seasons with Saint Mary's.
Last but not least on the scoresheet was once again Brianna Jurasek in the 84th minute off a ferocious left-footed half-volley. Jurasek's strike came off a long cross from redshirt-freshman Faith Gunter, who joined Soraya Souvanaphong as the only Gaels to play the full 90 minutes in both contests during the opening week. Souvanaphong also made her second career start and logged her second consecutive clean sheet for the Gaels with a pair of saves in the win.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's will continue its homestand with two non-conference matchups in the coming week. The Gaels will first take on the UC Davis Aggies on Thursday, August 20th at 5:00 p.m. They will then face the fourteenth-ranked Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday, August 23rd at 1:00 p.m. in what represents a rematch from last season as Saint Mary's upset Georgetown on the road 2-0. Thursday's match will kick off Lamorinda Week for Saint Mary's Athletics where tickets will be 5$ off and can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets. Both matches can be streamed live on ESPN+.
