SACRAMENTO, Calif. -The Saint Mary's women's soccer team took down the Sacramento State Hornets 3-2 on Thursday, the Gaels' fourteenth consecutive game without a loss, which now stands alone as the longest streak in program history. Forward Ashlyn Vaughn picked up her first career brace, while midfielder Penelope Correa logged her first collegiate goal in a thrilling back-and-forth match against the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gaels tested the Hornets early on, as midfielder Zoe Maikai and forward Ashlyn Vaughn continued to make relentless runs in behind to wreak havoc on the Hornets' back line. Despite the early pressure from the Gaels, Sac State would strike first on a long counter from forward Candace Ching in the 29th minute. The Gaels quickly responded though with a great team goal in the 33rd minute capped off by freshman midfielder Penelope Correa for her first collegiate goal. Fellow freshman Brianna Jurasek would get credit for the assist as well as center back Faith Gunter who started the attack with a long direct ball in the Gaels' defensive half. The match went into the break tied at one.

Saint Mary's continued to put the pressure on, recording five shots in the first twenty minutes of the second half. The decisive moment finally came in the 69th minute, when forward Brooklyn Smith drove into the box and drew a penalty, which was then converted by Ashlyn Vaughn once again for her fourth goal of the season. Vaughn wasn't done there, as in the 88th minute she capitalized on a saved effort by Zoe Maikai to tap in the rebound and pick up her second goal of the game and fifth of the season. Although the Hornets picked up a late goal in the 88th minute, the Gaels saw the game out and picked up their fourth consecutive victory over the Hornets and fifth of the 2026 season to remain unbeaten.

GAME NOTES

The Gaels have now recorded a 14-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season, breaking the program record set by Paul Ratcliffe's side in 2001.
This was the first time the Gaels have allowed a goal all season, ending their record-breaking streak of seven shutouts to start the season.
Penelope Correa scored her first collegiate goal in the match, her second career goal contribution after the assist to Ashlyn Vaughn against USC.
Ashlyn Vaughn scored twice for the Gaels, becoming the first Gael to score five goals this season; the brace was also the first of her career.
Two Gaels played the full 90 minutes, with defender Anna Emperador and midfielder Maddie Lucas logging the full 90. This was Emperador's fifth consecutive game playing the full 90 for the Gaels.
