MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team outshot Columbia 14-3 in what became a wet and soggy Thursday evening but the match would end scoreless for the team's third draw of the season. The Gaels tallied 11 second half shots which featured a pair of goal line clearances but the Lions were able to hold on and muster a point on the road.

Saint Mary's extended its program record shutout streak to start a season to six games and are now unbeaten at home over their past 18 dating back to the 2024 season. Second year forward Ashlyn Vaughn led the Gaels with four shot attempts while true freshman Penelope Correa was effective off the bench, recording three shot attempts over her 51 minutes of action. Kate Plachy returned to the starting lineup for the first time this season and was relatively untested, needing to make just one save in what would go down as her 19th career shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half featured just three total shots with all three attempts coming from Saint Mary's. Columbia established quality ball possession in the middle third of the field and were very deliberate in their build up, but the Gaels midfield and backline continued to put in stout challenges, keeping the Lions out of the shot column over the first 45 minutes. The half's best chance came from true freshman Brianna Jurasek who had a left footed shot denied on the near post for the lone save of the half for Columbia keeper Samantha Mahoney.

The second half would look starkly different than the first as both teams combined for 14 shot attempts with 11 in favor of the Gaels. Columbia had a pair of early chances but Saint Mary's would finish the game on the front foot with several dangerous opportunities on net. In the 64th minute, Brittany Holden got down the left side and fired a cut back ball on the ground that found the right foot of Correa. Her shot was goal-bound but blocked just in front of the Lions keeper to go out for a corner. In the 71st minute, the Gaels would force a turnover off a free kick inside the Lions penalty box and Holden would square a pass to a wide open Brooklyn Smith who one-timed a shot headed for the back of the net but was also cleared off the line, helping preserve the scoreless draw for Columbia.

The Gaels are now unbeaten at home in 18 consecutive matches dating back to 2024; the longest such streak in program history
The shutout went down as the sixth consecutive of the season, tying the program record which has been set two other times both in 2025 and 1999
The Gaels are also riding a current 12-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season which stands as the second longest streak in program history
Seven of the starting 11 players for Saint Mary's would go the distance and play all 90 minutes
Plachy earned her 19th career shutout, making just one save over her 90 minutes of action
Saint Mary's outshot Columbia 14-3 and are now averaging 11.3 shots per game
The Gaels remain the only WCC team to not concede a goal this season and are one of five teams in the nation to have not allowed a goal
