Athletic Director's Column

Welcome to our redesigned web site !

COLUMN ARCHIVE

During the past several months, Andy McDowell, Assistant Director for Marketing and Media Relations, and Rich Davi, our Sports Information Director have worked diligently with many others to make this new site a reality. We hope you find the site informative and useful. Our goal through the redesign has been to better serve those interested in our athletic program with current information on Gael athletics as well as to develop opportunities to provide merchandise and tickets through the site. While the site is up, there will continue to be additional offerings provided over the next few weeks. Please check the site regularly for enhancements. As always, we continue to welcome your comments and suggestions.

A few weeks ago we kicked off our season ticket campaign for football. We have a competition going amongst three teams of alumni, friends and liaisons from our staff to see who can sell the most tickets. Thank you to Brad Trebish ('86), Ryan Seto ('91), and Rich Ellyson ('96) for providing leadership for the three teams. Please support the effort of the volunteers and our student-athletes by purchasing season football tickets. Our goal is ambitious...to sell 1,000 season football tickets. With the help of our volunteers and the support of our alumni and friends, we are confident we will achieve our goal.

We are in the final quarter of the fiscal year for our fund-raising effort for the Gael Athletic Scholarship Fund. We need everyone's contribution to meet our goal. All funds raised go to athletic grants-in-aid for our student-athletes. If you have not made a gift this year, you may do so by going to Donor Relations. Please support our student-athletes through your annual donation to the Scholarship Fund.

We have had two new additions to our coaching staff in the past couple of months. Jon Stevenson was appointed head women's volleyball coach on February 25. Jon comes to us from Sonoma State University where in two short years he provided the leadership for a dramatic turnaround in their volleyball fortunes. He is committed to the educational success of our student-athletes and developing our program in to a contender in the West Coast Conference.

Gene Mirra was hired as our first ever, full-time strength and conditioning coach on March 1. Gene is already at work enhancing the Power Plant and working with the head coaches of all 15 of our sport programs. He is enthusiastic, dedicated, and committed to improving the flexibility and strength of all of our student athletes. Please join me in welcoming these two gentlemen to Saint Mary's.

Now is a great time to be a Gael! Across the board, the competitiveness of our programs is improving and the performance of our student-athletes in the classroom has never been better. I will share more on our performance in next month's column.

We welcome, value and appreciate your support!

Go Gaels!
