McKeon Pavilion Receives New Gym Floor Six-Week Project Set To Finish May 15th

McKeon Pavilion Receives New Gym Floor

April 29, 2004

Moraga, CA - McKeon Pavilion, home of the men's and women's basketball teams and the women's volleyball team, is currently having a new hardwood floor installed in the 27-year-old arena. The six-week project began April 8, and is scheduled to finish on May 15th.

McKeon Pavilion, the largest enclosed arena in Contra Costa County, has had the original floor in place since the arena opened on January 21, 1978. The new gym floor, which is a First-Grade Maple Floor, features an anchored system, which does not allow for dead spots. The previous gym floor featured a floating system that allowed dead spots to occur. The new floor is also a certified floor that has been tested to prevent dead spots.

"We are extremely happy to be getting a brand new floor, especially one that will be around for years to come," Assistant Athletic Director for Game Operations Steve Jacoby said. "It will improve our facility tremendously."

McKeon Pavilion's floor was removed earlier this month.

The removal of the gym floor began on April 8. After the old wood was removed, the laying of the new floor began April 13. Currently, the floor is close to being sanded, painted and then varnished for a May 15th opening.

Once finished, the floor will feature an SMC logo on the center of the court, with navy blue lines around the floor. Saint Mary's will be lined under each basket, with West Coast Conference logos on each side of the floor.

The Pavilion features a 3,500-seat facility with six moveable baskets and can hold up to three volleyball courts. The Pavilion is also used by the Kinesiology and Recreational Sports for teaching activity classes and intramural events.
