Saint Mary's softball split during their own tournament this past weekend, and one of their youngest pitchers played a big role. Odhi Vasquez was named this week's Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week after a dominant performance on Saturday morning.
Vasquez turned in the best outing of her young collegiate career this week, blanking Utah State in seven shutout innings (technically in relief) in a 2-0 Gaels win. She entered in the first inning after two hitters reached base and was lights out the rest of the way, allowing just three hits with two walks while striking out 10 for her first collegiate win. She also added three shutout innings of relief work on Sunday against San Jose State, with a 1.31 ERA across 10.2 innings and 12 Ks this week.
This is the first win of the season by a Gaels softball player, with just two weeks in their season having gone by. Vasquez is first pitcher for SMC to win the weekly award since Sofia Earle did so on March 14, 2022.
