STANFORD, Calif. — It was another epic day of softball action at Stanford Softball Stadium, as Saint Mary's split its day two twin bill at the Stanford Softball Round Robin, defeating 14th ranked Washington for the second straight day, 3-2 in 11 innings, before falling against 24th ranked Stanford, 6-1. While the Gaels program record 12 game win streak came to an end, they continued to prove that they can hang tough and beat some of the best teams in the nation.
Sam Buckley was the headliner for the Gaels today, smashing two homers against Washington to tie, then subsequently break the program home runs record. Madeline Haun got the start and tossed six solid innings, but it was Odhi Vasquez, who tossed the final five innings scoreless and picked up her 14th victory of the season. In game two, Victoria Castillo accounted for two of the Gaels three total hits, including their lone run on a solo blast.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One (11 Inn.) | Saint Mary's 3, No. 14 Washington 2
For the second straight game, the Gaels bested the 14th ranked Huskies, this time in extra innings, 3-2 in 11 frames. Sam Buckley got the offense started in the first with a two run blast, tying the program record with her 25th career homer. Freshman Madeline Haun was stellar in the circle, surrendering just one run on three hits through the first five frames. She gave up the equalizing run in the sixth, but induced a double play to get through six full, tied at two apiece.
The Gaels went to Odhi Vasquez out of the pen in the seventh, and she was her usual brilliant self, keeping the Huskies bats at bay through the final inning of regulation, and extras. Buckley led off the 11th inning with a solo shot, becoming the all-time leader outright in program history for home runs with 26. Vasquez would strike out the side in the bottom half to secure her second straight victory over the Huskies in as many days.
Game Two | No. 24 Stanford 6, Saint Mary's 1
Starter Ella Thurman bounced back after surrendering a leadoff home run to retire seven of the next eight batters she faced. Victoria Castillo blasted her second home run of the season in the second to draw the game level at one, but a two run Cardinal blast in the third would push them back in front.
Stanford added three more runs in the fourth, before the Gaels went to the pen to bring in Mia Nishikawa. The junior was stellar over the final 2.2, keeping the Gaels in contention, not allowing a run. The offense was unable to rally however, as they were limited to just three hits, two from Castillo, and one from Camille Lara, as the game came to an end at a 6-1 scoreline.
GAME NOTES
The Gaels will have a rematch with the Cardinal tomorrow in their Stanford Round Robin finale. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
