SB | Gaels Shock 14th Ranked Huskies for First Ranked Win Since 2017

STANFORD, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team kicked off the Stanford Round Robin with a bang, snapping the Washington Huskies 20-game win streak for their first ranked win since 2017, 5-2. The win extended the Gaels' program-record win streak to 11 straight, now good for third best in the nation.
Odhi Vasquez worked the complete game effort, fanning a season-high 11, while allowing just three hits against the explosive Huskies, notching her 13th win of the season, and running her unbeaten streak to 16 consecutive outings. Hannah Ferguson logged the lone two hit game for the Gaels with a pair of infield singles, scoring a run. Sam Buckley and Alex Cutonilli each tallied an extra base hit, with Buckley ripping a triple and Cutonilli mashing a ball over the center field fence, both actions coming in the sixth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Washington entering the game with a team batting average of .340, Odhi Vasquez was stellar in the circle, getting through the first three innings without surrendering a hit and facing just one more than the minimum. The Huskies struck first, however, in the fourth, with a home run, followed by two hit batsmen and a double to take a 2-0 lead. Following that double, however, Vasquez surrendered just one more hit, while fanning a season-high 11 for her first double-digit strikeout performance of the year.
The Gaels offense was held quiet through five innings, but broke out in the sixth, plating all five of their runs in that frame. Hannah Ferguson led off the inning with an infield single, and was bunted over to second by Camille Lara. Braxton Brown reached on a dropped ball by the Husky first baseman, with Ferguson coming around to score on the play. Sam Buckley then ripped an opposite field triple to right, plating Brown, and came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Victoria Castillo, beating a throw to the plate, giving Saint Mary's its first lead. Alex Cutonilli smashed a pitch over the center field fence for a pair of key insurance runs, giving the Gaels a three run lead they would ride all the way to the victory.
