Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (11-12, 7-4 WCC) lost to the University of San Francisco (12-10, 4-7 WCC) in the first of the Gaels final home games, 3-2. The games scored 15-12, 18-16, 11-15, 10-15, and 11-15.
The Gaels started game with a blast, jumping out to a 5-0. The Dons came roaring back to finally gain the lead at 6-7. USF stretched the lead to 6-11, before a Carla Vandenbark kill got the Gaels back into the game at 7-11 and en route to a 15-12 win. Saint Mary's continued to play well as the opened game 2-0 with a 9-0 lead. However, the nine point deficit did not phase the Dons as they scored the next ten points and took the lead at 10-9. Saint Mary's had plenty of chances to gain control of the match, but were unable to hold off the relentless play of San Francisco. USF expanded their lead to 13-10 and then the race began. The Gaels tied the score at 14-14 and Rachelle Von kill gave the Gaels the lead once again. In the next six points the lead changed three times, as Saint Mary's rallied from a 15-16 deficit to win on a Von kill, 18-16.
Both teams traded points early in game three, but USF gained control at 4-6 and scored the next eight points to lead 14-4. Saint Mary's rallied after a Coolbaugh block to pull within three points at 11-14, but USF scored after the next side-out to take game three, 15-11. Once again the Gaels scored the first point, opening game four with a 3-0 lead. The Dons answered with the next seven points, to continue the streaking play of each team. The Gaels closed in on the lead at 5-8, but the Dons responded to pull away 5-14. Saint Mary's made a late rally to close-in 10-14, before USF scored the final point to force a decisive fifth game.
In game five the Gaels scored the first point for the fourth on the night and again USF responded to the Gael attack to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams exchanged points as USF never lost the lead after going up 3-2.
