Moraga, CA (May 4) - Saint Mary's men's basketball coach Dave Bollwinkel announced that Paul Marigney (Oakland, CA) signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Gaels starting with the 2000-01 season. Marigney becomes the fifth player to sign with Saint Mary's and is the third spring signing.
"Since the first day I saw Paul play two years ago we wanted him to be a Gael," said Dave Bollwinkel. "He possesses a great combination of size, speed, quickness, and ball skills and is the premier senior guard in the Bay Area."
Marigney is a 6-3, 185 pound guard that averaged 18.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game as a senior at Castlemont High School in Oakland, CA. He was the second leading scorer in the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) and was voted the team Most Valuable Player for the second time. As a junior, he led the OAL in scoring (21.5 ppg).
"Paul is an outstanding student-athlete. He is a versatile veteran of the Oakland Athletic League wars," commented Castlemont High School head coach John Lorigo. "Paul achieved great success at Castlemont against quality competition which will prepare him for the tough games he will play in the West Coast Conference. He is a good person and will add to the chemistry of the team and the coaching staff."
Marigney received a number of awards during his time at Castlemont. Along with being named the team's MVP twice, he was a two-time unanimous All-OAL selection. He was the MVP of the Las Vegas Prep Invitational and Las Vegas Summer Classic. He was the Alameda Newspaper Group's Sports Prep of the Month for December 1999 and was named second team all-metro by the San Francisco Examiner as a junior. He was named all tournament at the Chris Vonture De La Salle Classic as a senior and was an all-tournament selection in every tournament he played in during his career.
"Paul has benefited from the fine teaching of Castlemont head coach John Lorigo and from playing this past summer with the Oakland Slam-N-Jam Soldiers, Northern California's top traveling team," mentioned Bollwinkel. "One of his teammates during the summer was De La Salle's Chris Schlatter, who will also be coming to Saint Mary's College. Current freshman Jovan Harris had previously played in this program, run by Calvin Andrews, and we are pleased that these great players from the East Bay will all be starring in Moraga."
The son of Gwendolyn Dowell and Paul Marigney, Paul joins a freshman class that includes early signings Chris Schlatter (6-6, 190) and Chase Poole (6-9, 205). He also joins recent junior college signings Chris Baert (6-10, 225) and Teohn Conner (6-3, 190)
