Women's Tennis Finish Fifth at WCC Championships

San Diego, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team (7-16) completed the 2001 season with a fifth place finish at the West Coast Conference tennis championships.
Saint Mary's defeated Santa Clara, 4-3, on Sunday to earn the fifth place finish with a 2-1 record in the championship. The Gaels opened the tournament with a 7-0 loss to host San Diego on Friday, then defeated Gonzaga 5-2 on Saturday.
The match against Santa Clara came down the the final match between Saint Mary's Valerie Verrier and SCU's Pati Ruiz at the No. 4 singles. Verrier was trailing 5-1 in the third set before making a huge comeback to win the set 7-6. Verrier won her match 4-6, 6-0, 7-6. Saint Mary's dropped the doubles point and defaulted a point at the No. 6 singles before sweeping the top four singles matches, all in three sets.
Karen Holland, a 2001 Honorable Mention All-WCC selection, finished the weekend 2-1. After dropping her opening match to San Diego's Katarina Valkyova 6-3, 6-3, Holland defeated Sarah Ust of Gonzaga 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) on Saturday and Christine Limners of Santa Clara 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 on Sunday. Holland finished the season with a17-6 overall record in singles play, 15-6 as the Gaels No. 1 player.
