Final Stats
Malibu, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team lost it's West Coast Conference opener to the Pepperdine Waves (10-4/1-0), 80-73. Jermisha Dosty (Fair Oaks, CA) recorded a career high 27 points and 22 rebounds.
The Gaels would look impressive in the beginning of the game, pulling out to a quick 9-3 lead. The Gaels would keep the lead thanks to the shooting and rebounding from the Dosty twins until the 9:40minute mark. The Gaels would regain the lead off of a jumper by junior Katie Davis (Manson, WA) at the 6:38 minute mark. The Waves would then go on a 14-5 run to end the half and take a 7-point lead at the break. The Gaels shot 39 percent in the first half and recorded 21 turnovers.
The Gaels came out ignited in the second half cutting the Waves lead to two. The Waves would then prove to be too much for the Gaels as they led by as much as 15 in the second half. Too many missed shots and turnovers made it difficult for the Gaels to get back in the game. SMC would bring it within three points with 1:08 left in the game, but that would be as close as the Gaels would come. The Waves would finish the game at the foul line to win by seven.
Misha Dosty was unstoppable as she tallied a career high 22 rebounds which four more than her previous career high and just three short of the school record. Also scoring in double figures for the Gaels was sister Jerkisha Dosty (Fair Oaks, CA) who tallied 19 points and seven rebounds. Both Davis and Julie Morris (Lafayette, CA) added 11 points on the night.
Leading the way for the Waves was Tamara McDonald and Damaris Hinojosa, who both dropped in 13 points. As a team the Gaels shot 40 percent from the floor and 18 percent from behind the arc to the Waves 40 percent from the floor and 23 percent from behind the arc. The Gaels were out-rebounded 43-42.
The Gaels will continue conference action when they travel to play the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday the 12th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
