Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (9-7-1/3-1 WCC) won its second straight West Coast Conference game, defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs (5-10/0-4 WCC), 2-1, on Friday, October 25, on Garaventa Field.
The Gaels took little time to get on the board when Jennifer Barbera took the ball the distance and scored to the upper right corner at the 8:26 minute mark. Barbera's fifth goal of the season gave the Gaels a 1-0 lead.
SMC added to their lead at the 26:36 minute when Sarah Takekawa slipped a shot past the 'Zags keeper, Ashley Haugen, on a double-assist by Sarah Churchill and Katie Fagundes.
At the 39:14 minute mark the Bulldogs cut the Gaels lead in half when Heidi Jacobson scored on an unassisted goal on a SMC defensive miscue. At the end of the half the Gaels led 2-1.
The score remained the same at the end of regulation as both teams missed on possible scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, the Gaels had three shots in the second half fall short of a third goal, hitting the post.
SMC goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery tallied two saves on four GU shots, while GU's Haugen tallied six saves on 21 SMC shots.
The Gaels will return to WCC action when they host #5 Portland on Sunday, October 27. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon on Garaventa Field.
