Women's Basketball Defeats California, 71-64

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team (5-4) extended their home win streak to four games by defeating the California Golden Bears (3-4), 71-64, on Saturday, December 21 in McKeon Pavilion. Four Gaels finished in double-figure scoring, the second time this season.

In the first half the Gaels didn't look as solid as they wanted to. Cal took a 8-3 lead after five minutes of play. The Gaels would slowly inch their way back into the game behind the solid rebounding of Triola Jackson (San Diego, CA) and Katie Davis (Manson, WA). The Gaels would extend their lead by as much as five points with 1:33 minutes remaining in the first half. Cal cut the lead to two-points at the half as the Gaels led 29-27.

At the end of the first half with the Gaels leading, SMC shot 31.4 percent from the floor, 100 percent from beyond the arc and 50.0 percent from the charity stripe.

The Gaels started the second half with a 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead. Cal would then cut the lead to seven after a three-pointer by Sarah Pool but Davis' hot hand gave the Gaels a 13-point lead after consecutive three-pointers. That lead diminished though behind Cal's 17-4 run, tying the score at 51. After a 57-56 lead by Cal, the Gaels battled back taking the lead for good.

Offensively the Gaels had four players score in double figures. Jackson finished with her fifth double-double of the season scoring 17 points and recording 15 rebounds. Davis and Julie Morris (Moraga, CA) finished with 16 points and Danielle Ferris (Eureka, CA) totaled 14 points. Ferris also dropped in six assists.

The Gaels will continue non-conference play when travel to Stockton, CA to battle Pacific on Saturday, December 28. This game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:00 PM.
