Women's Basketball Edges Past Santa Clara 84-76

Moraga, CA - Junior forward, Katie Davis stole the show on Senior Day by scoring a career-high 25 points to lead the Saint Mary's women's basketball team (14-10/8-4 WCC) to an 84-76 West Coast Conference win over Santa Clara (17-8/7-5 WCC) on Saturday.

Davis had the hot hand as she connected on all five three point attempts. She finished the game 7-for-11 from the field and hit 6-of-6 free throws, four coming in the final minutes to help ice the game. Seniors Jerkisha and Jermisha Dosty would not go unnoticed on their day, as they scored 20 and 13 points, respectively. Jerkisha added nine rebounds and finished the game 8-for-16 from the field. Jermisha posted a game-high 16 rebounds and her 13th double-double of the season and 37th of her career. Jermisha also added a career-high seven assists.

For the Broncos, Becki Ashbaugh dished out nine assist to tie the Santa Clara career assists record with 591 total assists in her career. Four Broncos finished in double figures as Courtney Cushing had a career-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Cushing also had a team-high eight rebounds. Tammy Annas added 15 points and eight rebounds and Caroline Gruening and Kendra Rhea had 10 points each.

Saint Mary's dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Broncos 52-40. The Gaels shot 42.6 percent (26-61) from the field and held Santa Clara to 35.0 percent (28-80) for the game. SMC shot an impressive 73.7 percent from the free throw line, hitting 27-of-35 attempts from the charity strip. Carey Noakes was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line for the Gaels.

The game was a sea-saw affair for most of the first half. With Santa Clara leading 29-25 at the 7:14 mark, Saint Mary's used an 18-4 run to open a 42-33 lead with 1:09 until halftime. Baskets by Gruening and Ashbaugh cut the Gael lead to 42-37 at the break.

Saint Mary's never lost its lead in the second half which hovered around the seven points until the 13:33 mark, when SCU cut the lead to 55-50. The Gaels would extend the lead to 10 points, its biggest lead of the game, with 6:53 remaining. However, the Broncos would not go away, as they cut the lead to 77-73 with 43 ticks left. The Gaels made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Saint Mary's will close the 2001-02 regular season in the road next week. The Gaels will travel to Gonzaga for a Thursday night game then head to Portland for the final game of the season on Saturday. Tip-off for both games is set for 7:00 p.m.
